In the United States military, a general is the most senior general-grade officer; it is the highest achievable commissioned officer rank (or echelon) that may be attained in the U.s. Armed Forces, with exception of the Navy (with the equivalent being Admiral). The official and formal insignia of General is divers past its four-stars (ordinarily silver in a row).
The rank of general ranks higher up a lieutenant general and below the special wartime ranks of General of the Army or General of the Air Forcefulness; the Marine Corps and Space Forcefulness practice not have an established class above general. The pay grade of full general is O-x. It is equivalent to the rank of admiral in the other U.s.a. uniformed services which use naval ranks. Information technology is abbreviated as GEN in the Regular army and Gen in the Marine Corps, Air Forcefulness, and Space Forcefulness.
Since the ranks of Full general of the Army and General of the Air Forcefulness are reserved for wartime use only, the rank of general is the highest general officer rank in peacetime.

Formally, the term "General" is always used when referring to a four-star general. Notwithstanding, a number of unlike terms may refer to them informally, since lower-ranking generals may besides exist referred to equally simply "General".
Statutory limits [edit]
The U.s. Code explicitly limits the total number of general officers (termed flag officers in the Navy and Coast Guard) that may be on active duty at whatsoever given time. The total number of active duty general officers is capped at 231 for the Army, 62 for the Marine Corps, 198 for the Air Forcefulness, and 162 for the Navy. No more than about 25% of a service'southward active duty full general or flag officers may have more two stars,[2] and statute sets the total number of four-star officers allowed in each service.[ii] This is set at vii Regular army generals, 2 Marine generals, eight Air Force generals, 2 Space Force generals, vi Navy admirals, and 2 Coast Guard admirals.[2] [ failed verification ]
Several of these slots are reserved by statute. For example, the ii highest-ranking members of each service (the service chief and deputy service chief) are designated as generals. For the Ground forces the Chief of Staff and the Vice Principal of Staff are generals; for the Marine Corps, the Commandant and the Assistant Commandant are both generals; for the Air Forcefulness, the Chief of Staff and Vice Chief of Staff are generals; and for the Space Strength, the Chief of Space Operations, and the Vice Chief of Space Operations are generals. In addition, for the National Guard, the Principal of the National Guard Bureau[3] is a general under active duty in the Army or Air Force.
At that place are several exceptions to these limits allowing more allotted within the statute:[iv]
- An officer serving as Chairman or Vice Chairman of the Articulation Chiefs of Staff;
- an officer serving equally Primary of the National Guard Bureau counts only against their service's four-star cap;
- the commander of a Unified Combatant Control;[five]
- the commander of United States Forces Korea;[five]
- officers serving in certain intelligence positions i.e. the Director of the Central Intelligence Bureau;[six]

Finally, all statutory limits may be waived at the President's discretion during time of war or national emergency.[seven]
Date and tour length [edit]
4-star grades go hand-in-hand with the positions of office to which they are linked, and then the rank is temporary; the agile rank of general tin only exist held for so long- though upon retirement, if satisfactory service requirements are met, the general or admiral is normally allowed to hold that rank in retirement, rather than reverting to a lower position, as was formerly usually the case.[8] Their agile rank expires with the expiration of their term of role, which is usually set by statute.[viii] Generals are nominated for the appointment by the President from any eligible officers holding the rank of brigadier general or above who see the requirements for the position, with the advice of the Secretarial assistant of Defence force, service secretarial assistant (Secretary of the Army, Secretary of the Navy, or Secretarial assistant of the Air Force), and if applicable the Articulation Chiefs of Staff.[8] For some positions, statute allows the President to waive those requirements for a nominee accounted to serve national interests.[9] The nominee must be confirmed by the United states Senate earlier the appointee can take function and assume the rank.[viii] Full general ranks may also exist given by act of Congress but this is extremely rare. The standard tour for nigh full general positions is three years, bundled equally a ii-year term plus a one-yr extension, with the following exceptions:
- Service chiefs serve for four years in one four-yr term.
- The Chief of the National Baby-sit Bureau serves a nominal 4 years.
